Flagstaff, Jerome, and Tuzigoot

Weekend road trip to north Arizona down through Sedona to Camp Verde and then through Jerome and back to Phoenix.

Flagstaff
Flagstaff is a city in the U.S. state of Arizona, surrounded by mountains, desert and ponderosa pine forests. It’s a gateway to the San Francisco Peaks, home to Arizona’s tallest mountain (Humphreys Peak) and the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort. Nearby, Wupatki National Monument has Native American pueblo sites, and Walnut Canyon National Monument is dotted with their cliff dwellings.

Jerome
Jerome is a town in central Arizona. The Mine Museum explores Jerome's history as a booming copper-mining town. Jerome State Historic Park is home to Douglas Mansion, built in 1916 by a mining magnate. Nearby, Audrey Headframe Park has a glass viewing platform over a 1918 mine shaft. Art galleries and small wineries dot the downtown area. To the east, Tuzigoot National Monument preserves an ancient hilltop pueblo.

Tuzigoot National Monument
Tuzigoot National Monument is a historic site located in the Verde Valley of Arizona. The monument is named after the Tuzigoot Apache tribe, who built a village on the site over 800 years ago. The village, known as Tuzigoot, was constructed using adobe and was occupied by the tribe until the 14th century.

Tuzigoot National Monument is located near the town of Clarkdale, Arizona. It is easily accessible from the town, and is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. The monument is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the cooler months of spring and fall.

The weather in the Verde Valley can vary depending on the season. In the summer, temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, making it important for visitors to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. In the winter, temperatures can drop below freezing, so it is important to be prepared for cold weather.

The Tuzigoot village is an example of the engineering skills of the Tuzigoot Apache tribe. The village was built using adobe, a type of mud and straw mixture that was formed into bricks and dried in the sun. The village was built on top of a hill, with the homes arranged in a circle around the central plaza. The village also had a defensive wall and a water storage system.

Tuzigoot National Monument offers a number of hiking trails, including the Tuzigoot Trail and the Ridge Trail. The trails offer stunning views of the surrounding area and provide opportunities to see a variety of plant and animal life. The monument also has a visitor center, where visitors can learn more about the history of the Tuzigoot Apache tribe and the village of Tuzigoot.

In conclusion, Tuzigoot National Monument is a fascinating and historic site that offers a unique glimpse into the past. The village of Tuzigoot is an impressive example of engineering, and the surrounding trails provide opportunities to explore the beauty of the Verde Valley. Whether you're interested in history, outdoor adventures, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Tuzigoot National Monument is a great place to visit.
